HOW TO PLAY
Østfold Razz
A variant of razz made at a cabin somewhere in Norway. In Østfold Razz all the clubs in a player’s entire 7 card hand at showdown gets counted, each club will shift the rank of the player’s own cards one pip down – but be aware the ranks do “wrap around” meaning an ace will turn into a King if there is a club in the players hand.
The club count will not affect bring-ins or who acts first, the hand plays out as a regular razz hand, the only change happens at showdown when the winner is decided.
Hand example:
Player A:
Qs – Tc – 8h – 5h – 4d – 4c – 2s
Club Count: 2
Actual hand:
T – 8 – 6 – 3 – 2- 2 – K
The player has a T8632 low
Player B:
Kh – Jd – 5s – 4s- 3s – 2h – Ac
Club Count: 1
Actual hand:
Q-T-4-3-2-A-K
The player has a T432A low
Player C:
Kc – Qc – Js – 8c – 7c – 4h – 3d
Club Count: 4
Actual hand:
9 – 8 – 7 – 4 – 3 – K – Q
The player has a 98743 low
Player C wins with a 9 low.
Playing the game live:
Be careful taking notes of your clubs, the action will start on you if you have 2c8c but your 2 would already be counterfeited into a picture card.
Notice how many clubs are dead, 2s and 3s might get playable when clubs are dead, while Ts, 9s and 8s gets better if clubs are live and you are more likely to catch them.
Pro tips:
- Avoid playing Ax hands at all cost even without a club in hand, the chance of not catching clubs is only about 25%.
- The middling to low cards (4-9) are the best in this game, steal wide into A, 2 and even a 3.
- Do not muck your hand unless you’re 100% sure you do not have the best hand, if you are unsure it’s better to table it.
